Jail House Rock

This is one of my all time favorite pictures. It shows inmates in the Greene County jail in Georgia. It was taken in 1941. It shows the prisoners singing and dancing. There is something encouraging about this picture . . . people celebrating despite their condition. One has to wonder if all of them were actually guilty of anything.

And, if they were actually guilty, would that "anything" be considered a crime, or anything close, today.

  2. and how do we know that this pictured wasn't "staged" by their white jailers?

The government is very good at staging public pictures

  4. Just to let you know Buddy Moss - the fellow playing the guitar - is a fantastic Piedmont blues musician with a large body of work from the 1930s - 80s

...he was supposedly jailed for having murdered his unfaithful woman
