Antietam

Today we feature a photograph of the Battle of Antietam, fought on this day (September 17) in the year 1862. The picture shows some of those who fell in battle. This was the bloodiest single day in United States history, with over 23,000 casualties in one day.

  1. Definitely a sad picture . . . I will try for something a little more cheerful tomorrow, but did not want to forget the significance of what happened on this day, so many years ago.

  2. Oh, absolutely. People who haven't been there need to see why war is hell.

  3. That reminds me of the battles we had in WW1

  4. The Battles in the Civil War were particularly brutal. Commanders had not figured out that with modern rifles, charging entrenched positions was suicide. World War I had its share of trench warfare as well, but with the addition of machine guns.
